Description
“Butterfly” by Pøbel
In 2006, Pøbel started a project in Lofoten called Ghetto Spedalsk. On one level, it was political, a response to the depopulation of rural Norway. In one of the richest countries in the world, houses, factories, and entire communities had simply been left behind. What happened to these places? Did people just move away, or were larger forces at work?
The project was also a reaction to street art itself. At the time, it was a scene defined by cities, streets, and urban decay. But what happens when you strip all of that away and place it in nature instead? Cities pull your attention in every direction, ads, traffic, visual noise. In northern Norway, none of that exists. The landscape became the canvas, and part of the work itself. Through that shift, Pøbel developed a visual language that was in contrast to what was happening in street art at the time, one where something visible drew attention to the invisible. Invisible places, invisible people, landscapes that modern society had stopped noticing. Places that still carry traces of those that lived and worked there, memories, history, and identity.
In 2007, Dolk joined the project. Over the next three years, the two painted more than a dozen abandoned houses and hidden walls across Lofoten. In 2012, Pøbel expanded the idea further, inviting ten international artists to paint fifty abandoned buildings in Vardø.
The relationship between abandoned places, rural landscapes, and contemporary art has remained a recurring thread in Pøbel’s work for the past twenty years. The projects have inspired, and been copied by, festivals and artists around the world, which is why preserving them feels important. They are part of both street art history and contemporary art history.
Butterfly was painted by Pøbel on an abandoned house on Gimsøy in 2009. It is the only remaining house from the Ghetto Spedalsk project.
About the editions
All three editions are screen printed, an analogue printing technique where paint is pressed through a mesh made by tiny silk-threads. Each color is printed by hand, layer by layer. It’s an old handcraft that is a time-consuming process that gives each print a special texture and depth.
The Main edition features the Butterfly motif screen-printed in two colors. Limited edition of 125.
The Gimsøy edition shows the motif as it actually appeared in 2009 on the wall of the abandoned house in Gimsøy. Screen-printed in eight colors. Limited edition of 35.
The Gimsøy HF is a Hand-Finish edition where all the colors have been spray-painted by Pøbel on each individual print, with a black layer screen-printed on top. This means that each work will have its own distinct and unique character. Limited edition of 10.

Why a buyer lottery?
Pøbel typically offers a print release like this only once or twice a year, and in previous years, it has sold out right away. While this high demand has been a privilege, it has also created challenges, particularly, bots and those quickest to enter their details often secured purchases before everyone else.
Selling via a buyer lottery aims to provide a fairer opportunity for everyone. By signing up, everyone has the same chance to be selected for a purchase through a random draw.
