About “Will Work For Food” by Pøbel – Hand-Pulled Screen Print

What happens when those who feed us can no longer feed themselves?

Pøbel’s “Will Work For Food” is a thought-provoking artwork originally painted on a 60x60m contingency food storage silo in Stavanger during the Nice Surprise art festival (2023). The image of a farmer, seated and holding a cardboard sign that reads “Will Work For Food,” speaks volumes about modern society’s fragile relationship with agriculture, labor, and survival. Is this farmer a symbol of resilience, an outcry against economic instability, or a stark warning about food politics and security?

This limited edition of 125 is produced using the hand-pulled screen-printing technique, a meticulous, time-honored craft that dates back over a thousand years. Unlike digital reproductions, each print is manually layered with ink using a fine mesh screen, creating a unique texture, depth, and vibrancy that cannot be replicated by machines. This process ensures that every piece carries subtle variations, making each print an artwork in itself. Hand-pulled prints have a deep-rooted history in contemporary and street art, celebrated for their tactile quality and connection to traditional craftsmanship.

How does the Buyer Lottery work?
  1. To make a purchase, you must first participate in the buyer lottery by signing up within the specified timeframe.
  2. During registration, you will provide your name, shipping address, and payment details. The total purchase amount will then be reserved on your bank card until the lottery concludes.
  3. After the lottery ends, those drawn will receive an email confirming their purchase. If you’re not drawn, you’ll receive an email letting you know, and your reservation will automatically be released.
Rules

– Only one signup per person/household per product.
– Shipping address cannot be changed after entering.
– A number of prints have been set aside for an exclusive draw only for farmers.

Why a Buyer Lottery?

Pøbel typically offers a print release like this only once or twice a year, and in previous years, it has sold out right away. While this high demand has been a privilege, it has also created challenges, particularly, bots and those quickest to enter their details often secured purchases before everyone else.
Selling via a buyer lottery aims to provide a fairer opportunity for everyone. By signing up, everyone has the same chance to be selected for a purchase through a random draw.
